SFI Foundation
The Speedway industry has developed to a stage where NASR is regarded as the peak national body by all the major competitor organisations, tracks and other stakeholders and through that recognition NASR has a clear role to lead safety development, while the associations are responsible for technical specifications for their racecars.
NASR joined the SFI Foundation in 2006 for the benefit of all Speedway Stakeholders, so at the end of the day NASR can provide all divisions with the benefit of an international safety standard. The SFI Foundation operates a test laboratory dedicated to the evaluation of safety products and has an extensive list of tested and approved racing apparel and equipment.
The SFI also offers personal training and certificate programs for scrutineers and safety crews plus accident response programs and procedures. NASR now has access to these standards and training programs. Members include CAMS, ANDRA, NASCAR, CART, IRL, NHRA, USAC and Speedway New Zealand.
The SFI Foundation is a non-profit organisation based in the US established to issue and administer standards for specialty/performance automotive and racing equipment. It generates a wide range of Quality Assurance Specifications for safety related motor sport products that form “accepted industry-wide standards” which have proven to help reduce accidents, injuries, fatalities and therefore insurance claims and litigation.
Its origin dates back to 1963 when a group of racing products manufacturers formed SEMA (Speed Equipment Manufacturers Association). The SFI Foundation now works independent from SEMA (now called the Specialty Equipment Marketing Association) and maintains its own managerial staff and oversees technical committees.
The Foundation is funded by companies, which voluntarily participate in the specification program, along with financial support from member sanctioning bodies. As a result of this support SFI has developed programs for almost eighty different products used by manufacturers, motor sport groups and consumers worldwide.
The easiest way to check if a product meets an SFI Specification is to log onto the SFI web site at: http://www.sfifoundation.com, click on ‘Manufacturers’, followed by clicking on the specification number. The manufacturers of certified products will appear on a list, along with a link to their web site.SFI membership is a huge leap forward in the uniformity, professionalism, protection and safety of Australian Speedway racing and should be embraced by all Speedway Stakeholders.
