Speedway Safety Advisory Committee (SSAC)

The NASR Speedway Safety Advisory Committee (SSAC) was formed in 2006 to give advice and provide guidelines to the NASR Board on relevant aspects of safety and competition regulation in Australian Speedway. It is designed to liaise closely with national and international technical associations and provide safety reports at the NASR National Safety Conference.

Peter Schloithe (SA)

Peter Schloithe works for the Safety and Fire Office for the Film and Motor sport Industry and is a fully endorsed Safety Officer with the Australian Institute of Sport and the Federation Internationale De L’Automobile (FIA). Schloithe’s impressive motor sport experience extends to being appointed as Motor sport Fire and Rescue (SA and NT) and Speedway City Chief Fire Marshall since 1992, Australian Formula One Grand Prix Deputy Fire Chief from 1985 to 1996, Adelaide International Raceway Track Safety Officer from 1992 to 2002, Classic Adelaide Chief Safety Officer from 1998 to 2000 and Clipsal 500 Chief Fire Marshall since the event began in 1999.

Greg Foster (VIC)

Greg Foster is the Sprintcar Control Council of Australia (SCCA) National Technical Officer and is also the operator of D&F Racing Products and Fosters Chassis based in Victoria, which has won 3 Manufacturer of the Year Awards. Foster has been involved in speedway since 1979 and is also currently a scrutineer for the Speedway Racing Association of Victoria (SRA) and State delegate to the SCCA.

David Conlin (QLD)

David Conlin joins the committee from Dirt Modified Australia as their National Technical Officer and has over 43 years experience behind the wheel as well as constructing race cars.

Des Alfirevich (WA)

Des Alfirevich is a qualified automotive engineer with over 36 years of involvement in motor sport including 10 years operating a company supplying safety apparel. He is the current National Technical Officer for Speedway Sedans Australia (ASCF) and has held technical positions at the State level with the WASCF and WASDA (Speedcars). Des was one of the key people involved with the development of Junior Sedan racing in WA. Des is also a Commissioner of the West Australian Speedway Commission (WASC), Chairman of the WASC Safety and Regulation Committee, and Chairman of NASR (WA).

Paul Plater (VIC)

Paul Plater, from the Victorian vintage movement, is a Metallurgical Engineer with a Bachelor of Metallurgical Engineering (first class honours) and Masters of Business Administration. Plater has extensive knowledge in materials testing, welding, risk management plus OH&S. He has restored 2 Classic Sprintcars and enjoys driving at various demonstration events.

Dale Rodgers (VIC)

Dale Rodgers is the managing director of Revolution Racegear (since 1997) which manufactures a full range of SFI Foundation (SFI) and FIA approved racing apparel and boasts a 20-year career in leading Australian and Multi National advertising agencies. Rodgers raced in the Victorian Sports Car Championship from 1980 to 1990 and ran a semi professional motor sports photographic and media agency for 10 years. He has been a board member of the Australian National Drag Racing Association (ANDRA) National Executive Committee since 2001 and the following year was appointed as the Confederation of Australian Motor sport (CAMS) representative to the FIA Equipment Working Group in 2002.

Gary Pendlebury (NT)

Gary Pendlebury is the Executive Officer of the SCCA and director of the Assessing and Training Centre, which operates nationally accredited training courses. Pendlebury is also president of the Northine Speedway in Darwin and NT Chief Steward for the SCCA and SSA. He has developed and provided training courses in driving and riding plus established and implemented risk reduction policies for police motor vehicle accidents.

Guy Thompson (TAS)

Guy Thompson has built and raced Super Sedans throughout Australia and managed the reconstruction of the safety fence at Latrobe Speedway, plus had major input to construction methods used. Thompson’s extensive involvement in speedway includes being a board member of the Latrobe Speedway, Tasmanian president of TSCF and board member of Speedway Sedans Australia (ASCF).

Ken Small (QLD)

Ken Small is the Chairman of the NASR National Council and has over 43 years of experience in speedway as a competitor and administrator. Small is a qualified automotive engineer, is an accredited OH&S Officer, is a Justice of the Peace and has sales, service and management experience at various national automotive companies.

Paul Trengove (SA)

Paul Trengove is NASR’s Competition Manager and raced Formula Holden and Formula 3. Trengove has a Bachelor of Commerce degree and was recruited as a Graduate Accountant into the South Australian Government. Paul will be responsible for the administration of the committee.

With such a rich wealth of knowledge and expertise to draw upon the SSAC will provide speedway with a positive avenue to improve safety and develop continued risk management policies and procedures and will become a major benefit for all NASR members and speedway stakeholders.
